Conduct local risk control
This unit is about looking at the job in front of you, working out what could go wrong, and putting controls in place before you start.
What you'll need to know
- Risk management process and terminology.
- Hierarchy of control and how each level applies on site.
- Local site rules, exclusion zones and permits.
- Reporting lines and documentation requirements.
Workplace skills
- Identify hazards for a described work area and record them.
- Apply the hierarchy of control to at least two identified hazards.
- Monitor and report on the effectiveness of applied controls.
What the unit says, step by step
1. Plan and prepare for local risk control
- 1.1 Find and read the paperwork for the job — including the SWMS.
- 1.2 Work out what could go wrong and deal with it.
2. Identify and assess risk
- 2.1 Walk the area and find the hazards.
- 2.2 Decide how likely harm is and how bad it could be.
3. Apply and monitor risk controls
- 3.1 Put the right controls in place.
- 3.2 Keep checking the controls are working and speak up if they are not.
Assessment conditions: Assessment occurs under the RTO's assessment arrangements using site documentation and workplace or simulated civil work conditions.

- exclusion zoneAn area you must stay out of, usually around plant or an excavation.
