Why it matters
PPE is your last bit of protection. It only works if it fits you, it is not damaged, and it suits the job you are doing right now.
- Hard hat: no cracks, headband firm, not older than the stamped date
- Eye protection: clear, unscratched, rated for the task
- Hi-vis: clean enough to be seen at dusk and in dust
- Boots: steel cap, laced, sole with grip
- Gloves and hearing protection: matched to the tool, not just any pair
On the job
Before you pick up a tool, ask yourself: what could hit me, cut me, burn me or hurt my ears? Your answer tells you what gear to wear. Cutting concrete? Add eye, ear and dust protection. Handling steel bar? Add tough gloves.
Check and report
Do not tape up broken gear. Tag it, hand it in and get new gear. Telling your boss about worn gear is part of the job. It is not complaining.
